Over in France, over 200 specialists from the GE Healthcare Global Center of Excellence in Medical Imaging Software have been working together to come up with a new, innovative tool that uses virtual reality to get a close-up 3D view of the inside of our bodies. This is just one of many projects that are being worked on currently at the center.

GE Healthcare is primarily involved in making software that will assist doctors, surgeons, and radiologists get a better look inside the human body. This will enable them to perform more accurate diagnosis’s and ultimately make better decisions. They are pioneers in anatomical 3D modeling using General Electric scanner images. The art of 3D modeling anatomically is an ideal way to get a targeted view of an organ from all angles. Surgeons can also use a 3D printer if need be to give them the chance to handle the organ they are about to mend. Moving on, the next step will be to use a virtual reality headset to project inside the organ.

Big data techniques based on connection to machine learning and cloud equipment is another area being explored in full at the center of excellence. Software Director at GE Healthcare, Jerome Gonichon, said, “This is an ongoing development process. Today, we are collecting data from the way that we are using our equipment so that we can improve it. Tomorrow, we can teach the machine to recognize cancer by itself.”

This is a fantastic innovation for the healthcare industry and one that will allow patients to be diagnosed more accurately and treated more quickly. It won’t replace traditional doctors but will help them in treating patients far more efficiently. The GE Healthcare imaging equipment doesn’t store its data locally; instead, it connects to a network linking the data from 30,000 machines allowing physicians access to valuable information when they need it. With this in mind, there’s no doubt both professionals and patients alike will benefit from this system and give us a greater understanding of the workings of the human body.
