IBM loves nothing more than predicting what the future may hold for us in terms of technology. Once again, they’ve made it their duty to publish a list of the five technological innovations that they feel will have the biggest impact on us over the next five years.  Here they are in no particular order:

  • The Rise of Macroscopes: Macroscopes are the opposite of microscopes in that they allow the user to view satellite imagery from a bird’s eye view, like that of Google Earth. This type of technology will utilize more data from weather stations, smart sensors, and satellites and offer better ways to organize the data too. It will apply to home appliances such as fridges and lights, and could even be used to predict things such as climate change or better ways of distributing food around the world.

  • Smart Sensor Advancements: AI analysis and smart hardware may be the answer to automatically detecting environmental pollution levels. This could be done using drones, without the need to transport any samples to the lab. Using smart sensors in places of dangerous conditions such as along pipelines could save the lives of many by being able to detect a problem much quicker than before.

  • Mental Health Speech Diagnosis: Developments in AI may mean that mental illnesses such as Parkinson’s could soon be diagnosed using a simple phone app. A team from the University of Southern California has already designed a program that can detect signs of depression just from hearing someone’s speech pattern.

  • Superhero Vision Could Soon Be Possible: With the help of new, powerful little cameras and of course AI, we could soon be viewing more than we ever have before including microwave, millimeter wave, and infrared images. You could also use this type of technology to see if food is safe to eat or allow self-driving cars to see more easily in the rain or fog.

  • Nanotechnology Will Revolutionize Medicine: With nanotechnology comes more accurate diagnosis’ in the comfort of your home at a much lower cost than you’ve ever seen.  IBM explains, “New medical labs on a chip will serve as nanotechnology health detectives – tracing invisible clues in our bodily fluids and letting us know immediately if we have reason to see a doctor.” Detecting certain illnesses early can make all the difference to a person’s life, and with the help of AI that is now possible.
