Autism is a disability that affects social interaction, and the way in which the person views the world. It is a very common condition, affecting more than 3.5 million Americans, and about 1 percent of the total world population. According to research, that figure is set to continue to rise and so learning all we can about the disorder is imperative to be able to deal with it.
The National Autism Society hopes to raise people’s awareness and provide a better understanding of what it is like to deal with everyday life for someone on the autism spectrum. Autism is a lifelong condition that affects people in different ways, but many share some of the same symptoms such as difficulty in socializing or understanding jokes, having repetitive behaviors or routines, or being highly sensitive to sensory perception.
By introducing a new virtual reality app, the National Autism Society have created a real-life simulation of the issues people with autism struggle with daily. It focuses its attention on a boy with autism who becomes overwhelmed by the noises and lights all around him and gives an accurate insight as to how terrifying this condition can be. The 360-degree video is a dizzying, terrifying experience that can also be enhanced by using a virtual reality viewer and headphones.
The charity is looking to scare people for no reason. They are simply to trying to raise awareness as to the difficulties in dealing with autism daily and to remind us to be perhaps more patient and mindful of those that are having to live with the disability. If everyone is a little more aware of what autism is and how it affects people, then we can all work together to provide a happier environment for everyone.
